Home Renovation Checklist for Delhi Homes
A renovation goes smoothly when decisions are made in the right order. Use this checklist before you call any contractor.

1. Write down what you actually want changed
List problems first (leaking bathroom, no kitchen storage, old floor), then wishes. Problems usually have to be fixed; wishes can be phased if the budget is tight.
2. Check permissions and society rules
In apartments, check RWA rules on working hours, debris, lift use and facade changes. For independent houses, any addition of area needs approvals. Never cut columns, beams or load-bearing walls.
3. Fix the hidden things first
Concealed plumbing, wiring and waterproofing are cheapest to fix while walls and floors are open. If the house is 15–20 years old, it is worth replacing old GI water lines and checking the electrical load.
4. Follow the right sequence
Civil and breaking, then plumbing and electrical, then waterproofing, tiles and flooring, then ceiling, then carpentry, and painting last. See civil work and home renovation.
5. Finalise materials before work begins
Tiles, sanitaryware, kitchen finishes, laminates and paint shades should be selected early. Late changes cause delays and rework.
6. Get an itemised estimate
Ask for item-wise quantities and rates rather than a single lump sum. It makes comparing quotes and adjusting scope much easier. Our guide on cost factors explains what to look for.
7. Agree payment stages
Link payments to completed stages – civil done, tiles done, carpentry done – rather than dates.
8. Do a proper handover check
Open every drawer and door, run every tap and flush, check tile slope in bathrooms, and switch on every light point before final payment.
